“Local finds pen is mightier than sword.”

Street Smarts from Christian Martial Arts is the title of a newly published book written by East Springfield resident and author, J. Brown.  After graduating from Northwestern High School in 1987, Brown, a karate master, spent the next 15 years teaching martial arts in the area until he was called to be a Christian minister.

Street Smarts is a compilation of his wisdom from both teaching karate and working in Christian ministry.  Each of the chapters of the book conveys a different life lesson as a holistic (mind, body, spirit) approach to healthy living.  The book addresses such subjects as discipline, balance, life choices, success, authority, goal setting, conflict resolution, respect, self control, and perseverance.

Brown currently holds a sixth degree black belt, and began his training in the late 1970’s.  He began teaching for Tae Bo© founder Billy Blanks, as senior instructor of two locations of the Billy Blanks Karate Academy before launching nine of his own schools in the early 1990’s.  He has won various awards in local, national, and international tournaments.

Brown has been a Christian all his life and is making the pastoral ministry his full time vocation.  Last year, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Concordia University in Austin, Texas with his bachelor’s degree in Biblical languages and Theology.  Currently he is finishing his final academic year at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

His desire in writing the book was for everyone to know that the Christian faith and the martial arts can indeed go hand in hand.  After graduating, Brown hopes to continue his work in both the martial arts and Christian ministry by using his skills in teaching karate as an outreach in the community and as a way to spread the Gospel.

More information about Street Smarts from Christian Martial Arts can be found by going to Brown’s website at  Cost of the book is $14.95 and the book is available for purchase online.tar Beacon Print Edition: 9/23/2006
